Food Insecurity Atlas of Rural India

The "The Food Insecurity Atlas of Rural India", has been jointly prepared by WFP and M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation. It is the result of a comprehensive food insecurity analysis. The Atlas attempts to explain the multifaceted character of food insecurity in India and identifies the 'hot spots' of food insecurity. Food assistance programmes are identified as a critical instrument to address food insecurity. The analysis reveals that in spite of comfortable food reserves in the country, India has the largest absolute numbers of undernourished people in the world, thus highlighting the coexistence of high levels of child and maternal malnutrition with high levels of food supply. Since identifying the food insecure areas and people is the key element for increasing effectiveness, the Atlas will be an effective tool in targeting food based safety nets to the most vulnerable areas and people suffering from hunger and malnutrition.
