Pant suggests review of food procurement policy

Herald News Service

NEW DELHI, April 25 - The Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Mr. K.C. Pant today suggested a review of the food procurements  policy as surplus production of food-grains has not helped in eradicating hunger.

Speaking at the technical consultation on "Towards Hunger Free India" organized jointly by Planning Commission, World Food Programme and MS. Swaminathan Research Foundation, he said the food procurement policy was perhaps becoming a vehicle for supporting high prices of food-grains.

He said there was a need to strike a balance between what was necessary for the welfare of the farmers and for the welfare of the consumers.

Mr. Pant pointed out that agriculture growth has to be viewed as means towards food security.
