February 2001, Times of India, New Delhi, India High-energy biscuits for villagers The Times of India News Service NEW DELHI: The World Food Programme is readying to supply 300 tonnes of high-energy biscuits to residents of remote villages of Gujarat, where no help has reached. In 200 gm packets, these micronutrient-fortified biscuits are considered an appropriate alternative to cooking amid dislocation and a shortage of fuel. WFP describes this as modest interim relief to help prevent further nutritional deterioration. For, even before the earthquake, Gujarat was considered the second most vulnerable state - after Bihar - in terms of food insecurity. WFP's analysis looked at food availability, access, utilisation and vulnerability to disasters. WFP says the per capita calorie intake per day for the lowest income-expenditure group in Gujarat is only 1,788 kcal, against the all-India average of 1,934 kcal. The percentage of people suffering from chronic energy deficiency and the percentage of children under five years suffering from stunting and wasting is very high in the state.
